You Like Anime and You’re How Old?

I admit it, I’m now a 50 year old woman who likes to watch cartoons. No, not cartoons – anime. There’s a difference. I try to explain this to my friends, of which none of  them understand this little obsession of mine, and they look at me like I’m a Trekky. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, but I’m not a Trekky;) Okay, so I have an engineering degree, I’ve seen pretty much all the Star Trek movies and I love technology. But I’m not a Trekky, because I’ve never written or read KirkxSpock slash.

I’ve gotten off track…So my friends do think of anime like cartoons, except they don’t think of them as “cool” cartoons like Family Guy or The Simpsons or even South Park. No, anime is not cool like that. Anime plots deal with deep issues, like kids whose father abandoned them trying to resurrect their dead mothers (FMA) or a psychopath thinking they can ring in a new era for humanity by killing all the criminals in the world with a magic notebook (Death Note), or  a war which pits  natural born humans against genetically modified humans (Gundam Seed). No, that’s not cool. But having some baby with a head shaped like a football who can talk to the dog is great entertainment (Family Guy). Okay, it is funny. And I do like that as well. My kids love it in fact, even though they don’t get most of the jokes and I’m probably not a great mother letting them watch it. Of course, my kids think anime is not cool.

I did get my boyfriend to watch an anime with me (insert made him watch it under penalty of not making me angry with him), and I think he actually liked it. Though he never asked to watch it. I always had to say, “Hey, lets watch that next episode of Ergo Proxy”. He’d mumble something in return and I’d happily put it on.

I think the biggest gripe I’ve heard about watching anime in the US is that most of it is subtitled. Us Americans do not like to have to read and that rings true for subtitles. I may be talking to wrong audience here, since if you follow my blog you probably read my Yaoi, M/M Romance books and/or fanfiction. But asking an American to read and watch a program at the same time? No way. I have to admit myself that I’d rather see an anime that’s been dubbed. It’s just easier and you can see all the great animation that’s going on without having to divert your eyeballs to the bottom of the screen.

So back to my point about being a 50 year old woman who likes to watch anime – I’m not all that strange, I’m not a Trekky (no, I’m not!) and it’s good, damn it. If you haven’t, you should give it a try:)

I write M/M Romance… What?

Reaction to writing M/M Romance

When people find out that I’m a writer, usually from a friend who can’t wait to say something about it, I always get asked, “Really? What do you write?” Seeing as how I’m a Yaoi, M/M Romance author, I’m always a bit taken aback. I usually start out with saying, “Oh, romance.” Most people just nod at this. Of course, the friend or acquaintance I happen to be with always has to blurt out, “She writes gay porn!”.  I can’t tell you all how dang annoying that is. Not only do I now have to explain that what I write is not “porn”, though it is erotic, but I also have to explain what many of you who read my work or my blog already know – there is a large audience for gay romance written for women (mostly) by women. It’s not all that strange and hey, wasn’t Brokeback Mountain hot?

But wait, this gets even better. Since I was first published in 2008, I’ve been on three job interviews. Now these interviews were specifically for high tech marketing jobs, where being a published author is an advantage. So of course my resume has a section on this fact. Now I didn’t really think much of it, until the last two interviews I had wanted to know specifics about my writing. They asked, “What do you write?” I gave them the standard answer, “Romance books.” But they wanted to know, specifically, what did I write? And they wanted to know my pen name, so they could look me up and see my website! Ah, the horror!

Although I’m pretty proud of my website, because all the design and such is by me:), I really did not want these engineering-type geeks, although they were probably fans of Star Wars and maybe even anime, looking me up and seeing that I write M/M Romance. I mean come on, I’m trying to get a job here! I’d love for everyone in the world to be open minded, nonjudgmental and all that good stuff. But this is real life and it’s my livelihood. I’ve got two kids to support – wait, and a dog and now two Guinea Pigs. So what did I say? No, they could not have my pen name. It’s private and they wouldn’t like it anyway, LOL.

I got the job:) And now some of my co-workers do know what I write and they like it.

New Yaoi, M/M Romance Book Cover – Secrets

Yaoi, M/M Romance Character, Christian from Secrets

Okay, so it’s in the very early stages, but I’m working on the cover for my new Yaoi, M/M Romance book, Secrets. The first round of edits are done!

So far, all I’ve got is Christian’s face (because that’s always what I like to draw first). Here’s a picture, minus a few things I still need to add:)

So, who is Christian? He’s a bad boy rocker, who can be incredibly loving if you win his heart. He is charismatic on the outside and appears  confident and even a bit cocky, when in fact, he’s a broken soul struggling to become the man he should have been.

Girls swoon over him, especially when he’s onstage, but as he tells Logan, they’ve never quite held his attention.  He’s living a hard life of fast women, motorcycles and booze.

The Christian Logan fell in love with in high school was smart and studious, Logan’s best friend and next-door neighbor. But Christian lost his way after his father died. Logan’s not sure what to make of him now…
